Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2022, £12.00
Peter Morrell, Editor, comments, “I have recently tried the Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2022, and this New Zealand wine certainly measures up to the expectation of a Marlborough area vintage.
“I drank this over two nights pairing it with lightly cooked lamb chops on the first evening. As it’s been quite hot this week I popped the bottle in the fridge for an hour before dinner. This made the wine very refreshing, and the flavours didn’t crowd out the lamb. On the second night I paired it at room temperature with a Spanish pork and chorizo stew, to equalise the balance between all the strong flavours.
“The wine itself pours light, bright ruby colour, and on the nose cherry and raspberry aromas are to the fore with background hints of smoke. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied with a lively acidity and the well-balanced tannins makes it very smooth.
“On the palate the cherry and raspberry flavours remain with the addition of strawberries and more complex tastes like oak, leather, and vanilla. The finish is long and fruity with an appealing smoky taste at the end.”

Devil’s Corner Pinot Noir 2023, £15
Peter Morrell, Editor comments “I have recently tasted the Devil’s Corner Pinot Noir and can understand why it’s ranked as the *#1 Pinot Noir in Australia. The wine pours a mid to dark ruby colour and the bouquet is bright and fresh with pronounced raspberry and cherry aromas and hints of oak and vanilla in the background. In the mouth the body of the wine is just to the light side of medium, and the lively acidity makes it ideal to drink with food.
“On the palate the fruits remain and are joined by earthy tones, cedar, black pepper, and cranberries. The tannins are well balanced and smooth, due to the wine having been aged for 3 to 4 months in French oak. This maturing process is also the reason the complex flavours on the palate. The finish is long with persistent fruit and spice notes.
“Drink this wine with BBQ meats, roast shoulder of lamb, and strong cheeses.”
