Natasha Blair sees superb acting enhanced by an enthralling story
Lovers of serious theatre will not want to miss The Lehman Trilogy a three hander with John Heffernan, Aaron Krohn and Howard W. Overshown. A revival of the critically acclaimed play, the actors portray the three brothers, their sons, grandsons, and even their wives through the generations.
The play opens on a cold September morning in 1844, when Hayes Lehmann a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. The son of a cattle merchant he becomes Henry Lehman, settling in Montgomery Alabama, and opening a general store. He is soon joined by his two brothers, and an American epic saga of hard work and grafting begins.
The play takes you through their lives and achievements to where in 1929 The Lehman Corporation, an investment company, is created. In 2007, the Lehman Brothers are entangled in the subprime mortgage lending crisis, and the following year Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc files a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition. With billions of dollars wiped out, it triggers the biggest financial crisis in history.
The staging, a rotating glass and steel box, together with music appropriate to every scenario, fuses the monochrome austerity of a modern office with the black and white of old photographs.
Directed by Academy Award®, Tony Award®, and Golden Globe winner Sam Mendes, The Lehman Trilogy is at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on Drury Lane until 5 January 2025.
Gillian Lynne Theatre, Drury Lane, London WC2 5PW.
