Lauren Ballantyne, Wine Product Developer at Tesco, comments: “Women play a pivotal and increasingly influential role in the wine industry today in what has been a traditionally male-dominated field. Their contributions are evident in the creation of unique wine styles, furthering the adoption of eco-friendly practices, and building inclusive spaces within the industry. Women-led initiatives and mentorship programs have also become key to fostering the next generation of wine professionals. Tesco supports this progress through its partnerships with women-led wineries and its celebration of female winemakers.

Whilst challenges persist, the future is promising, with growing mentorship programmes, inspiring role models, and an increasing number of female Masters of Wine.”

Amandla Shiraz Zinfandel 2023, £9.50

Peter Morrell, Editor comments, “This lovely red wine is produced in the
beautiful Western Cape region of South Africa by Praisy Dlamini, one of the brightest stars in the wine industry. I’ve toured the vineyards of this region and it’s the ideal ‘terroir’ for making this style of wine – with mountains, elevation, rich soil, sunshine, and cooling ocean breezes. The wine is a blend of Shiraz and Zinfandel (a spicier cousin of Italy’s Primitivo). The wine a dark ruby colour, and in the bouquet there are very well defined aromas of cherry, plum, black pepper and oak. In the mouth it is bold and full bodied with velvety smooth tannins.

On the palate the dark fruit remains and are joined by flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant, cinnamon, and vanilla. The finish is long and fruity with good spice notes. This is a very versatile wine and can be paired with most grilled and roast red meats.”
