Discover Loire Wines’ Crown Jewel, and Peter Morrell tastes one of the gems

June 14th marks a special occasion for wine lovers around the world as we celebrate Chenin Blanc say, a tribute to one of the most versatile and beloved grape varieties. If you’re searching for a wine that can do it all: crisp, sparkling or sweet… Look no further than Chenin Blanc. The Loire, renowned as the world’s 2nd largest producer of Chenin Blanc, invites you to explore the diverse mix of flavours and styles that the undisputed home of the grape has to offer.
Tucked away in the scenic landscapes of France, the Loire Valley is synonymous with high-quality production, and the Chenin Blanc grape is just one of the many exceptional grape varieties that the Loire has to offer. The region is celebrated for its diverse terroir, which allows their many winemakers to craft an array of Chenin Blanc wines that cater to every palate and occasion. From a crisp and refreshing Vouvray, to the rich and lavish Savennières, the Loire’s Chenin Blancs are a testament to the grape’s remarkable adaptability.
Chenin Blanc’s versatility is not just in its styles but also in its paring potential. Its bright acidity and complex flavour profile makes it an ideal companion for a wide range of dishes, from seafood and poultry to spicy Asian cuisine and creamy cheeses. This adaptability makes these wines a favourite among chefs and sommeliers who appreciate its ability to greatly enhance any dining experience.
As Chenin Blanc continues to capture the hearts of wine enthusiasts in the UK, it is quickly becoming a trendy alternative to the ever-popular Sauvignon Blanc. Its unique flavours make it an exciting adventure for those seeking something new and distinctive. Unlike Sauvignon Blanc, which is often characterised by its grassy and citrusy notes, Chenin Blanc provides a broader spectrum of flavours and textures, from dry and crisp, to lush and sweet. The UK market is embracing Chenin Blanc like never before, with its range of styles resonating with consumers eager to explore beyond the familiar.
Raise a glass of Chenin Blanc on June 14th to discover why this grape is celebrated worldwide. Whether you’re enjoying a summer garden party, a sophisticated dinner party or just a casual evening in with friends, there’s a Chenin Blanc from the Loire that’s perfect for the occasion.

Peter Morrell, Editor comments “I recently tasted the Vouvray Sec 2002 a wine made by the Domaine Francois et Julien Pinon which was founded in 1786 and is still family run. This wine is a single varietal made from my favourite white grape, the aromatic Chenin Blanc.
“The wine pours a light straw colour and there is a range of fruity aromas in the bouquet, predominately apple, lemon and peach. The first sip reveals an elegant character, it’s just to the light side of medium and on the palate there is apricot, zesty lemon, and touches of honey, and oak from barrel aging. The acidity is quite high, so it is very refreshing and there is a good supply of flintly minerality. The finish is fresh and bright. This is an excellent example of a chenin blanc and is ideal to match with seafood and summer salads.”
The essence of the Loire Valley was enjoyed at the Chenin Blanc International Celebration 2025, a one-of-a-kind event which captivated wine enthusiasts and professionals alike on July 5 to 9. 250 esteemed wine professionals, including winemakers, buyers, influencers, journalists, and scientists, gathered to honour the richness and diversity of Chenin Blanc. The celebration was a dynamic agenda featuring inspiring conferences, exclusive masterclasses, exceptional tastings, and immersive vineyard visits at iconic locations (Angers, Saumur, Vouvray, Chinon, Azaz-le-Rideau, Jasnières…).
