Here are some top picks available at Tesco:

Spain
Cune Rioja Crianza, £8 down from £10 until 08/09 for Clubcard holders only

With classic touches of vanilla and spice alongside berries and liquorice, Cune Crianza is produced by the fifth generation of the founders of CVNE, mainly from handpicked Tempranillo grapes. It ages for a minimum of one year in American and French oak casks and some months in the bottle prior to its release. The number one selling Crianza in Spain, this is an excellent introduction to the quality and style of CVNE’s wines.

Castillo de Ibiza Rosé, £10 down from £12 until 08/09 for Clubcard holders only

Castillo de Ibiza is made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Both are vinified separately with the saignee method. Cold maceration helps extract aromas as well as a subtle pink colour. Following the maceration, the skins are removed and the must ferments at a controlled temperature of around 15°C degrees.

The colour is a pale yet vibrant pink with peach hues. Crisp red fruit aromas on the nose (strawberries, raspberries, pomegranate) as well as stone fruit (peach, apricot) underpinned by a savoury note. Creamy and lingering finish – one to remember! Castillo de Ibiza is a sunset rose.

Mar De Frades Albariño, £17.50

A manual harvest is carried out into small crates, and the grapes selected with the utmost care. The must undergoes maceration using the Ganimede method for 8-10 hours, allowing optimal extraction of aromas and preservation of the saline character of the grapes, avoiding the use of sulphur derivatives. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts to conserve the aromas characteristic of the region, followed by meticulous work with the lees, giving the wine volume, balance, and enhancing its longevity.

France
Cotes des Voiles VDF, £6

This beautifully elegant, dry rose has been sourced from specially selected vineyards around France. Pale pink in colour, it is packed with fresh strawberry and raspberry flavours.

Lacheteau Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, £8

Wine made from white Sauvignon grape variety. It boosts an elegant pale yellow colour with green reflections. The expressive bouquet is dominated by notes of exotic fruit and redcurrant. Well-balanced, full and fresh on the palate, it is the perfect wine to drink with seafood and smoked fish.

Tesco Finest Picpoul de Pinet, £10

From grapes grown near the Bassin de Thau, as locals say that “The Picpoul vines need to have their heads in the wind and their feet in the sea”. This is a bone dry refreshing white with citrus and lime flavours and a long mineral finish. Pairs with oysters and seafood. A classic of the Languedoc region. From respected producer Les Costières De Pomérols.

Italy
Tesco Finest Chianti Classico, £11.50

Peter Morrell, Editor, comments “This award winning 2020 wine is made with the Sangiovese grape. It’s an aged Chianti from the Classico area, the oldest and most authentic of Chianti vineyards and is made by the Melini Winery who have produced Chiantis for centuries.

The wine pours a garnet red colour and the bouquet has enticing aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, plums and oak. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied, and the well-balanced tannins ensure a very smooth drinking experience.

On the palate the fruit flavours continue to please and are joined by vanilla and cedar notes, with herbal influences and eucalyptus, and the finish is fruity and persistent. Pair this with roast meat, hearty pasta dishes and strong cheeses.”

Prima Luna Frascati, £6.75

A light and refreshing wine with hints of green apple and citrus. Notes of slightly bitter almond on the finish.

Tesco Finest Amarone della Valpolicella, £21

Made with partially dried grapes to enhance concentration. From the celebrated producer Cantina Valpantena. Classically made using local varieties that are partially dried in small crates and aged in oak barrels for added concentration and complexity. Amarone is famed for its intense and full bodied flavours of ripe black fruits, chocolate and sweet spices with a rich, smooth finish. Pairs with: BBQ glazed ribs, duck ragu, risotto all’Amarone and Gorgonzola piccante.
