A Rosé by any other name would taste just as good

Peter Morrell seeks out some elegant Rosé wines to enjoy during long, languid, warm summer days and nights

I’ve been taking a look at Rosé wines to suggest for your drinking pleasure during the summer. They make a great alternative to whites and can be enjoyed with fish, seafood, charcuterie and salads. Here are some ideas

Taittinger Nocturne Rosé ‘City Lights’ NV

It’s not just the eye-catching design of the bottle that makes this champagne special, It’s not too dry so it’s very much a party drink. Made with the three classic champagne grapes chardonnay, pinot meunier and pinot noir it offers strong hints of brioche with light, well-structured tannins. As it’s sec this can be drunk with sweet dishes at the end of a meal.

Available from Harrods and Ann et Vin with an RRP of £60.40

Jean-Luc Colombo Pins Couches Rosé 2015

This wine brings you the Mediterranean in a glass. Made from Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvédre it has vibrant red fruits on the nose which develop into more herbaceous notes on the palate and the finish is clean and fresh. Try it with air dried ham and sausage.

Available from Bargain Booze, Vino Wines, Wino’s, Harrods, Ellie’s Cellar, Partridges of Sloane Street, Les Caves du Patron, Kingsgate Wines with an RRP of £11.10

Joseph Mellot Sancerre Le Rabault Rosé 2014

I reported recently on the white Sancerre from this producer who has been making wine since 1513. This is made from pinot noir and offers both floral and fruit aromas in the bouquet. Raspberry flavours in the mouth lead to a delicate finish. A goat’s cheese salad would work well with this

Available from Aitken Wines, Fountainhall Wines, The Whalley Wine Shop, The Leamington Wine Company, Eagle Wines with an RRP of £18.80

Villa Maria Private Bin Rosé 2015

This is from the renown New Zealand producer. Made from merlot and malbec there are hints of tropical fruit in the aroma which morph into more strawberry tones with hints of spice on the palate. It’s medium bodied with a good mouth feel and has a persistent finish. This would match well with grilled lamb chops.

Available from Tesco, Majestic, Temple Wines, Beers Wines & Spirits, Village Wines, Hailsham Cellars with an RRP of £10.30

Vina Real Rosado 2014

A wine from Spain and created from a blend of Viura and Tempranillo grapes. Both on the nose and the palate the aromas and flavours are a subtle blend of roses and red fruit with the latter persisting into the finish. Try this as an aperitif.

Available from Askew Wines, North and South Wines, The Whalley Wine Shop, The Wine Reserve, R Campbell and Sons with an RRP of £11.05

Cleefs Classic Collection Rosé 2014

This South African wine is a mix Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. This shows cherry aromas on the nose and is pleasantly dry in the mouth making it ideal to drink with smoked salmon and seafood. The finish is crisp and lively.

Available from Aitken Wines, York Wines, The Bottleneck, Fountainhall Wines, The Leamington Wine Company with an RRP of £8.95
