Peter Morrell and his wife take their granddaughters to the top of the Shard to spot eggs that have been strategically placed around London’s 360-degree skyline
There was great excitement recently when we all set off to do some Easter Egg spotting from the sky. My granddaughters had never been up to the Shard so this would be a treat in itself.
On arrival, their first adventure was when we travelled to the top of the building in the two-stage lift. The two lifts have both got video ceilings showing the ascent, so you really do get a sense of speed in the ear popping ride up.
Walking into the all-glass viewing area the kids were dazzled by a burst of light and the sensational view of London spread beneath them. They literally ran to the windows in anticipation of seeing some of London’s most iconic sights and buildings. The younger one especially was fascinated by the Walkie Talkie skyscraper across the river in the City. They were also finding it difficult to equate the train we had just travelled on to what looked like the toy trains they could see going into London Bridge Station.
After the initial thrill of being this high up, we started the hunt for the Easter eggs. All children need to do to take part is look out for six giant Easter Eggs that have been strategically placed in key locations around London’s skyline, marking their findings on a worksheet that provides facts and stats on the significance of some of these historical sites.
Some were more difficult to spot than others but after about 45 minutes they had found them all. Along the way they had been educated about some of the capital’s most significant sights – Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, The Monument, St Paul’s Cathedral, City Hall and many more.
As we made our way back down the multi-levelled viewing galleries The Shard’s very own Easter Bunny hopped over for a chat as he dispensed mini eggs to the kids. This was an extra thrill for them.
From the 6-22 April 2019, all visitors to The View from The Shard can take part in London’s highest Easter Egg Hunt. It really is a fun way to educate children about London and its long, rich history.
