Tesco Craft, Ale & Stout Buying Manager Luke O’Connor suggests a selection of craft beer BBQ matches
Tesco is predicting a 30-40% increase in craft beer sales this summer compared to the same period in 2019*, as more customers are adding cans and bottles from UK breweries to their baskets and enjoying high quality, characterful beers at home.
With 140 beers, from 25 breweries on Tesco shelves to choose from, narrowing it down can be a tricky task. To make summer hosting simple, Tesco Craft, Ale & Stout Buying Manager Luke O’Connor has shared his recommendations for brilliant matches to popular BBQ dishes.
From juicy IPAs and hoppy Pale Ales, to an alcohol-free alternative and stand-out cider, this summer there is something for every craft fan and BBQ menu at Tesco.
To match classic sausages or burgers:
Cloudwater Pale Ale, 3.7% abv, 440ml, £3.00
A modern Pale Ale that captures all the qualities that make this style so enduringly popular. Refreshing and approachable, yet full flavoured, it’s bursting with bright hoppy aromas. Soft and juicy, but big enough to stand up to robust flavours, it’s a versatile choice for food and works well as a palate cleanser alongside meaty mains. Try it with Tesco Fire Pit Jumbo Pork Sausages (1.12kg, £4.00).
To match garlic and herb grilled kebabs:
Northern Monk Faith in Futures, 6.5% abv, 440ml, £3.00
This IPA is all about juicy fruit, with El Dorado and Citra hops providing rich and zesty mango, Seville orange and guava notes, balanced with a refreshing bitterness. Velvety smooth, with a tangy citrus bite, it works brilliantly with food. Enjoy it alongside dishes with herb or garlic-based dressings and marinades, like the Tesco Fire Pit Garlic & Herb Chicken Kebabs (260g, £4.00).
To match aromatic or spicy marinades:
Brewdog Punk AF, 0.5% abv, 4x330ml, £5.00
A great low-alcohol alternative for those who still want the refreshing taste and character of a craft beer, but with less than 0.5% alcohol. It is full of juicy tropical fruit, mixed with grassy and pine notes. Low and no alcohol beers are a good choice alongside spicy food, as alcohol increases the perception of chilli heat. This is also a perfect pairing for subtler aromatics, such as those in the Tesco Firepit Mango Coconut & Lime Chicken Fillets (300g, £3.00).
To match vegan or veggie sausages:
Salt Huckaback, 5.5% abv, 440ml, £2.40 (vegan)
From West Yorkshire’s Salt brewery, Huckaback NEIPA is a juicy, hazy and super-refreshing vegan-friendly beer. Generous quantities of Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo hops give strong notes of lemon verbena and sherbet on the nose. In the mouth, it is smooth bodied, with a soft pithy bitterness on the finish. An excellent choice alongside veg-based BBQ menus, from vegetable skewers to plant-based burgers and sausages. Try it with the Wicked Kitchen 6 Chorizo Style Bangers (350g, £2.50).
To match BBQ pork:
Pulpt Flare Superior South West Cider, 4.9% abv, 500ml, £2.20
A gently sparkling blend of the finest bittersweet and bitter-sharp cider apples from the South West. Cider is a classic match for pork and this works particularly well with the sweet and smoky notes of a US-style BBQ rub or marinade, thanks to its slightly sweeter style and brilliantly balanced acidity and subtle tannins. Try it with the Tesco Finest North Carolina Inspired BBQ Pork (450g, £4.00).
