Peter Morrell tastes the world’s first Floral Rum

Surprise and impress over Christmas and New Year with Suncamino Floral Rum, the perfect way to kick start a winter evening or to wind-down the night. The luxurious bottle with its eye-catching gold detailing makes a striking gift to inspire a new found love of rum.
I have been tasting this rum, and its pedigree is impeccable. The rum is distilled in Barbados and aged for 8 years. It’s then shipped to Cape Town in South Africa and draws on the abundant floral life of the Western Cape. Suncamino is infused with natural extracts of Hibiscus, Honeybush and Orange Blossom at Cape Floral Kingdom, a World Heritage site, to create this unique drink.
Suncamino Floral Rum pours a light golden colour. In the bouquet there are strong floral notes of fresh flowers with hints of vanilla. As the rum moves to the palate these notes remain and are joined by honey, orange, oak and caramel with a woody undertone. This is a smooth, light, delicate rum, made for sipping. The finish is strong with a floral persistence.
This rum would make an excellent Christmas gift, and it is an ideal base for festive cocktails. To get you started here are some cocktail suggestions.

After the addition of the floral extracts, Suncamino is matured and bottled by hand. Suncamino does not contain sugar or colourants, and no filtration takes place to preserve as much of the natural flavours as possible.
Suncamino means “journey to the sun”. It was inspired by a sense of pilgrimage that resonated with three Capetonian friends with a love for adventure, the outdoors, and the ocean. Sitting on the beach one evening, they started to discuss the nuances of life in Cape Town: a variety of landscapes and terrains, two oceans that forge a tropical style East Coast yet a wild and picturesque West Coast, with an eclectic mix of cultures, tastes, sounds and sights. Suncamino was created to bottle and share this feeling.
