Two delicious single varietal reds from Villa Maria

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops we all need some comfort food and drink to keep us warm

Although New Zealand is known for its zesty Sauvignon Blancs, packed with lush tropical fruit flavours, it also produces delicate Pinot Noirs and rich red wines featuring the Shiraz (Syrah) grape. Some of the best examples of these wines come from Villa Maria, New Zealand’s most awarded winery including the distinction of being New Zealand’s most admired wine brand.

Here are two red varietal wines from Villa Maria’s fruit-driven Private Bin range that work well with casseroles and roasts.

Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Noir 2015

This wine is from the Marlborough region of New Zealand better know for Sauvignon Blanc but it is also the ideal environment for the production of quality Pinot Noir grapes.

There are strong aromas of red cherry and summer berries in the bouquet. These develop on the palate into rich, luscious fruit with subtle hints of spice. The wine is smooth and the soft tannins leave a light, fruity finish.

This would be an ideal companion to slow roasted lamb shoulder.

Available from The Co-op, Morrison’s, Asda, Hailsham Cellars, Vino Wines, Temple Wines, Bin 21, Famous Wines and www.nzhouseofwine.co.uk with an RRP of £13.35

Villa Maria Private Bin Shiraz 2014

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand. The vines border the Gimblett Gravels, an old river bed with free draining soil that is ideal for the production of quality red wines.

Herbal and red plum aromas on the nose are the first introduction to this powerful and punchy wine. The palate evolve into lush red stone fruit flavours with peppery notes. The tannins are smooth and well structured and the finish is persistently strong.

Match this wine with roast beef and hearty casseroles

Available from Wine Rack, Hailsham Cellars, Dylan’s Wine Merchants, Islington Wine and http://www.nzhouseofwine.co.uk with an RRP of £13.35
