This Autumn (16th October), well-known family owned Windmill Taverns Ltd will be expanding, announcing the launch of their fifth site in South East London, the first family opening in ten years
Introducing Mc & Sons to the local community, the Mc Elhinney’s are opening a traditional Irish pub with an authentic Thai twist nestled in the heart of Southwark between Blackfriars Road and Borough on Union Street SE1.
As you enter Mc & Sons, briefly take a step back in time and see where two worlds collide – neatly brought together by the traditions of an Irish family and authenticity of Thai cuisine – delivered in a modern way. The scene is set with hand-picked interiors comprising of stripped-back reclaimed furniture, wooden benches and recycled classic pub pieces sourced from all over the country and Ireland. As only a true Irish pub would have it, the focal point will be the bar, with a fantastic beer & ale selection. For the longer, laid back sessions, indulge in the hideaway snug, historically a favoured spot by Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas. Both areas available for private hire.
Boasting all the bells and whistles of a traditional Irish real ale pub (which are few and far between), Mc & Sons are reclaiming their heritage through the creation of a living memory wall, posed to spark customer interest. Frame-to-frame archives and family portraits adorn the walls telling the story of the Mc Elhinney family through the generations bringing Mc & Sons to life.
The new generation have bought with it a South East Asian heritage of their own thanks to Head Chef Lailar, and wife of a Mc Elhinney son (Johnny), sharing her creative Thai flair and exceptional knowledge of where to source the lesser known spices in town to create the best tasting dishes. Not to mention regular trips back home to Thailand’s Northern capital, Chiang Mai to spruce up the latest recipes to trial and test before serving up to customers.
With an emphasis on great service and outstanding quality, Mc & Sons will offer authentic Thai street food at reasonable prices. Served up in a friendly, welcoming environment for takeaway at lunch only (12pm-2:30pm) and table service at dinner (6:30pm – 10pm). Opt for the popular takeaway lunchboxes, priced from £5.50, or save yourself for a leisurely occasion later into the evening, with an opportunity to pre-book your preferred dining spot. Let your taste buds run wild, thanks to Chef Lailar’s inspired menu. Those in the know will go for the winning house special – marinated spicy pork salad. Alternatively work your way through the fine selection of stir fries, noodles and curries, packed full of flavour, priced from £8.50.
A carefully curated drinks list will be available for those discerning drinkers as well as a great value, ever-changing beer and ale list with choices suitable for both male and female drinkers. Especially on offer will be Singha Beer, perfectly paired with Thai dining to complement the heightened taste.
So whether you’re propped up at the bar with dried banana chips or pork scratchings, swinging by for a swift working lunch or gearing up for a relaxed evening session, Mc & Sons have got it covered and are already set to be a local favourite in no time.
