Piccini Chianti Reserva – £8
The best Sangiovese grapes are selected for Piccini Chianti Riserva. The grapes undergo soft pressing before being processed using the traditional method on the skins. They are fermented at controlled temperatures with a long maceration period to extract maximum fruit and balanced tannins. The wine spends 9 months in large oak barrels before release
Piccini was founded back in 1882 by Angiolio Piccini who started with just 7 hectares. Piccini now has four separate estates in its portfolio and ranks as one of the most recognisable Tuscan brands worldwide with fourth generation Mario and Martina Piccini at the helm
Villa Antinori Rosso – £16
The Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany since 1385. They helped create the Super Tuscan category and now Villa Antinori is now seen as a mini Super Tuscan.
I have tasted this wine, and it is exceptional. This 2019, with its impeccable heritage, is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. It pours a dark garnet colour, and the first sniff of the bouquet revealed lovely plum, cherry, blackberry, vanilla, oak, and smoky aromas. In the mouth the wine is medium to full bodied and on the palate the dark fruit flavours remain and are joined by tobacco and some subtle spicing. There are medium tannins and well balanced acidity making it dry and smooth. The finish is long and fruity.
The Villa Antinori Super Tuscan is the perfect match for food, pair it with steaks, casseroles, slow roasted lamb, and strong cheese like Stilton.
