Great North Pie

Great North Pie Co, the home of high quality, award-winning pies, has announced its latest menu of mouth-watering range of pie specials, available for nationwide home delivery.

The company, known for its traditional handcrafted pies made with quality ingredients, was founded in the Northwest in 2011, and has spent more than 10 years perfecting its all-butter pastry pie. With humble beginnings in a home kitchen, it now has two cafes and sends its small batch pies to consumers around the UK, as well as supplying the likes of Booths, Virgin Trains, Dukeshill, Stockport County FC and popular farmer’s markets, pubs, and restaurants across the country.

The seasonal menu, available from now until October, features four butter-pastry pies stuffed to the brim with beautifully flavoured local produce, in a range of classic flavour combinations. This season’s menu features an Indian-inspired vegetarian pie, alongside classic flavours like beef and ale, a new roast chicken special, plus the Lancashire cheese and onion pie which made the brand famous.

The pies on the menu now include:

Daal Gobi (V)
The lovingly crafted Daal Gobi features spiced urad daal lentils, marinated & roasted cauliflower, ginger, garlic, turmeric, deggi chilli, mustard seed, cardamon, clove, cinnamon and coriander.

14-Hour Braised Beef & Ale
For a delicious meat pie, the choice is clear with a 14 Hour Braised Beef, filled with Yorkshire grass-fed beef, Manchester Union Lager, and roasted carrot & celery, redcurrant jelly and Worcestershire sauce.

Roast Chicken
Roast Chicken, featuring crispy skinned, slowly roasted chicken, roasted onions and garlic, and topped off with white sauce, lemon and poppy seeds.

Classic Lancashire Cheese & Onion (V)
Great North Pie Co’s staple Lancashire Cheese & Onion pie, encompassing Dewlay’s tasty Lancashire Cheese, caramelized white onion, white pepper, nutmeg and Japanese breadcrumbs.

Peter Morrell editor comments “I recently ordered a box containing one each of the four pies listed above. By chance on the day the pies arrived my daughter and her husband were coming to dinner, so it was an ideal opportunity to try them. Delivery was fast and efficient, the pies were in an insulated package witha sealed bag of ice, and were still chilled when they arrived.

Preparation was easy, from room temperature pop them in a pre-heated oven on a warmed baking tray at 180c for 17-20 minutes. I got the internal temperature up to 75c, which took about 20 minutes.

We were impressed with the all-butter pastry, which was rich and crisp. My favourite was the Braised Beef and Ale pie, which had great depth of flavour. The Daal Gobi was commended by everyone for its light, aromatic taste. People round the table found the Lancashire Cheese and Onion excellent, together with the fact that both it and the Daal Gobi are vegetarian. Finally, the Roast Chicken was praised for the addition of roasted onions and garlic, and the brightening touch of lemon.

We really loved all the pies, and the care that has gone into making them gives the pies a real home-made taste and texture

All Great North Pie Co’s pies are made using its perfected butter-pastry recipe, making each and every pie crisp and light and truly delectable, and using the best quality ingredients from Northwest producers.

The team prides itself on using local ingredients to create their traditionally Northern pies with all-butter pastry and seasonal fillings. The menu is rotated every four months, but the original, and now signature, Lancashire Cheese & Onion pie is available all year round.

The brand’s other signature pies include the Corned Beef and Potato, a take on the classic meat and potato; and the Keema Pie, a take on classic beef mince, influenced by the founder’s foodie experiences over the years.

Having previously been voted Best Pie in Britain, alongside winning 9 other categories at the British Pie Awards, Great North Pie Co’s pies are now available for home delivery in boxes of 4 for £18 or 8 for £34. Every pie is baked fresh to order and delivered by courier in chilled packaging, with a shelf life of four days.

About Great North Pie Co.

Great North Pie Co. is a multi-award-winning company famous for its traditional handcrafted pies, made with quality ingredients. Founded by husband and wife team Neil and Sarah Broomfield, the business based in the North West now sends its small batch pies to consumers around the UK.

Before starting the business, co-founder Neil Broomfield, gained experience working with some of the UK’s most renowned chefs, including Paul Heathcoate MBE and chef Jeff Baker, who brought the first Michelin star to Leeds. In 2011 alongside his full-time job as a police officer, Neil went on to create the brand’s famous all-butter pastry pies from the couple’s kitchen, using local ingredients and baking in the family’s domestic oven to supply local farmer’s markets and restaurants.

One of the North West’s foodie success stories, over the past eleven years Great North Pie Co. has grown immensely, and the kitchen is now permanently housed at the brand’s warehouse and bakery in Wilmslow. The team, headed up by Neil, still use the same method of small-batch cooking and baking as they did at the very beginning, to make sure every pie is handcrafted with care.

Since the brand began, Great North Pie Co. has won nine categories at the British Pie Awards, and in 2015 the brand won the overall competition. Founder Neil has since gone on to judge the coveted pie awards, and Great North Pie has most recently been listed as a finalist in the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards, plus been nominated for Independent Food Producer of the Year at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival awards.
